This weekend (22-24 June) sees the second Great Get Together celebration which is inspired by the memory of former Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, who was tragically killed on 16 June 2016.
MP Derek Thomas said: “I share Jo’s belief that there is a groundswell of people who simply want to bring communities together and, across West Cornwall, there are a number of events planned to celebrate all that unites us.
“I know that many people will be enjoying Penzance’s Golowan Festival by attending Mazey and Quay Fair days but, if people do have a spare hour, I would recommend that they pop in to support an event.”
On Friday, 22nd June, the Penwith 50+ Forum is organising a coffee morning at Hanover Court, Penzance from 10am with a guest speaker from Wiltshire Farm Foods for people on their own; contact Chris Goninan on 01872 788722 if you would like to attend.
Also on Friday, St Ives School is organising a fun run for students as part of the Great Get together while Parc Eglos School in Helston is welcoming grandparents into the classroom to help their grandchildren with their lessons before they enjoy a cream tea (these two events are not for the general public).
The following day, Saturday, 23rd June, Helston Bowling Club is holding a Great Get Together event from 11am; also in Helston, the Swallows of Helston Gymnastics Club, on the Water Ma Trout Industrial Estate, are holding a community teashop event on the lawn in front of the club from 9am to noon while members take part in International Handstand Day.
On Saturday evening, St Ives Old Cornwall Society are holding their traditional Midsummer Bonfire on Carnstabba Hill, Halsetown (behind the Halsetown Inn car park) with music and community singing from 8pm while the bonfire will be lit at 9pm (pasties available).
If you’re in the Heamoor area on Sunday, there is another Great Get Together event from 2 to 5pm at St Thomas Church Hall, Church Road; refreshments are free or call Georgina on 07907 808322 for more information.
