I have written to the final two in the Conservative Leadership Election to ask for their thoughts on the following questions:
- What plan have you got to ensure that we leave the European Union and enjoy a future relationship of trade and cooperation?
- How are you going to deliver the recommendations of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) to achieve net zero emissions as soon as possible?
- What will you do to ensure that schools and colleges have the money they need to give our young people the best possible start?
- Will you set out a vision and commitment of Government for small businesses and entrepreneurs?
- What ideas have you got to ensure that people have access to good quality housing that they can afford?
- What do you intend to do to make sure that people feel safe and that police have the resources they need?
- Are you 100 percent committed to the funding of the NHS as promised by Theresa May and when will you set out your plans for funding social care for all?
I have attached Boris' response so that members can make an informed choice as to who they vote for because these things matter to West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me.
After three years and two missed deadlines, we must leave the EU on 31st October. I believe we can do much better than the current Withdrawal Agreement that has been rejected three times by Parliament and get the very best deal for business and the country. I do not want No Deal and continue to believe we will leave with a deal, however the EU must know we are serious about leaving on 31st October under any circumstances. The last three years of negotiation to leave the EU has left our country humiliated, our party on the verge of extinction, and we must stop Jeremy Corbyn getting into Downing Street.
I believe we should legislate for net zero emissions by 2050 whilst embracing the opportunity of green growth for the UK as a global decarbonisation leader. I have long been a passionate campaigner for improving air quality and will make this a total priority for my administration.
Recognising the importance of education, increasing school funding was one of the first policy announcements made during my campaign. The floor for primary schools should be at least £4000 per student and secondary schools should be at least £5,000 per student. I’ll ensure every child achieves their full potential with much needed extra funding for schools.
Championing small business is a key part of my One Nation agenda and I have pledged to deliver universal full fibre by 2025. When Mayor of London employment in the capital increased by 100,000 and London is now the best place in Europe for digital start-ups and scale-ups following the launch of Tech City. I aim to replicate my success in London across the country.
We need to be much more ambitious about building new homes and I support development that is in keeping with the wishes of local communities. Often residents are concerned about the impact of new housing on services and infrastructure, it is clear that we need to address this if we are to increase our housing stock. I know from my time as Mayor of London how important it is to work with local authority leaders to deliver the homes and investment we need. I delivered more affordable housing in a downturn than Labour did in a boom, almost 100,000 new homes of my mayoralty, and I have a bold vision for infrastructure, connectivity, education and social care in this country.
At a time of cuts in the police budget I maintained 32,000 frontline officers numbers, including additional 2,600 into neighbourhood beats. The murder rate fell by 50% in London and overall crime was cut by 20%. Safety will be a high priority for very many of your members, and my record as Mayor shows a strong record of delivering on such concerns across the country.
I can give you my firm commitment to making sure that the £394m a week that Theresa May pledged for the NHS reaches the front lines. Furthermore, it’s only right that we look after our ageing society. So, we must make sure that our adult social care system provides the best possible care for those who need it most.
I will build a team that delivers Brexit, wins back Conservative voters, defeats Corbyn, unites our party and our country, and reinforces the Conservative values that have been the foundation of our success so that Britain can move beyond Brexit and secure a brighter future for us all. If we get this wrong, we risk the chaos and uncertainty of Jeremy Corbyn, an emboldened SNP in Scotland, and the extinction of the Conservative Party as we know it.
Thank you again for writing to me, and I hope all is well in West Cornwall and on the Isles of Scilly!
Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP
