Prospective MP calls for new Train Care Centre in Penzance

Derek Thomas, the Conservative Prospective MP for the St Ives Constituency, has driven home the case for Penzance to be the location for a new Train Care Centre to create at least 60 jobs and boost the local economy.

Neighbouring Conservative MPs Sarah Newton and George Eustice met Derek Thomas last Saturday at Penzance station to discuss the idea further. Derek Thomas has been strongly supportive of a proposal from the Local Enterprise Partnership to build the new maintenance centre at Long Rock and he has raised the issue several times with the two local MPs to get their support. Sarah Newton raised the issue in parliament and both MPs have been pressing home the case within government for a package of new rail investment for Cornwall which includes the train care centre at Penzance.

George Eustice said, "Derek Thomas has made very clear that he wants to see new investment and more jobs created in Penzance and one of the things that all three of us are arguing for is new investment in Cornwall's rail infrastructure. Having discussed the idea of the train care centre further with Derek Thomas I am more convinced than ever that Penzance would be the right location for this project and I will be taking that view back to the Secretary of State for Transport."

Sarah Newton said "Since getting elected I have worked closely with Derek to make sure that the record levels of investment the government is making in rail infrastructure gets to the end of line in Penzance. I am confident that after all the hard work that Nigel Blackler and the transport team at Cornwall Council have put into working with George and I that we will have good news soon about significant rail investment in the Paddington to Penzance line. This is vital for sustainable economic growth, skilled and better paid jobs in Cornwall."

Derek Thomas has made delivering new infrastructure for West Cornwall one of his key priorities with longer term ambitions to see the regeneration of Penzance Harbour and the vital helicopter link to the Isles of Scilly reinstated.

Derek Thomas said "Securing the Train Care Centre would be such fantastic news for Penzance. This will give us the confidence boost we need to fight for more. We must fight for the money to regenerate our harbour and seafront. We must fight to attract new business and create more jobs in West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly."
