MP's Column

I visited Helston Community Hospital and met with Nick Buckland OBE who is the Chairman of Peninsula Community Health (the organisation that runs the community hospital). Together we toured the hospital and met many of the nursing staff there. The hospital is a place treasured and appreciated by so many. Within the year the way health and social care is managed will change. The priority for me is that the nursing staff and other medical professionals at Helston Community Hospital are recognised for the incredible work they do and are allowed to carry on their care with little or no disruption. I, along with the other Cornish MPs, am working with Health and Social Care providers to ensure we have the very best healthcare available.

On Thursday, as promised by the Prime Minister, the big round-table 'Stadium for Cornwall' meeting took place in West Cornwall with John Whittingdale MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. This brand new working group included representatives of Stadium 4 Cornwall, Cornish Pirates, Truro and Penwith College, Truro City Football Club, Cornwall Council, Sport England and the Local Enterprise Partnership. I attended on behalf of the Cornish MPs. We discussed the barriers that threaten the delivery of a stadium for Cornwall and what help the Government can give to ensure things move forward. We want to deliver a multi-sport facility (also used to train students in hospitality etc) with a capacity of between 6,000 and 12,000 people by August 2017. The stadium will be a boost for Cornwall and a boost for our
Cornish economy.

I had the great privilege of meeting one of Cornwall's music therapists to learn more about the work of the Cornwall Music Therapy Trust. Music is an incredible medium and the way this organisation uses music to support the healing, development and stimulation of people who are ill or have disabilities is quite incredible. For some people these sessions are a method of meaningful interaction and communication in a language they can engage with.
