I’m honoured to have been re-elected as your Member of Parliament. My vote increased to 22,120 from 18,491, up 4.9% in just two years and I thank everyone who supported me.
The national result presents uncertainties at a time when there is so much work to do. I want to assure everyone that I will continue to work hard for West Cornwall and Scilly. My priorities remain the same: to work hard to ensure we support an environment where high paid jobs can be created and local people can get the skills needed to secure these jobs. I will continue to work hard to ensure we have the housing we need and can afford. I will continue to work with GPs and other health and care professionals to bring health and care closer together and closer to home. It is important to clarify that there are no plans to cut £264 million from the NHS in Cornwall and on Scilly despite claims made during the election campaign. NHS services will continue to remain free at the point of use. It is also important to stress that the Government has provided an extra £24 million over three years for Cornwall Council to improve and increase adult social care services.
My hope is that the election result forces parliamentarians to be more determined to work together to address the challenges that face our great nation: to get a Brexit deal that is in the interest of the UK, to secure a healthcare system where the NHS can grow stronger and continue to provide the healthcare everyone needs when they need it, to provide the care and dignity everyone deserves in old age and ensure that every child gets the best start in life.
The UK also has a significant responsibility in ensuring nations work together for peace and to build a global community that provides for those who need help. This can be achieved through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org) and we must not lose sight of these as we address the priorities above.
I’m committed to all of the above and will work with colleagues to focus on these priorities.
