Fact and fiction in the smart meter roll-out

West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas has sponsored an event in Westminster at which MPs and civil servants were able to find out what is fact and what is fiction with regard to smart meters.

Experts from Smart Energy GB, the voice of Britain’s smart meter rollout, revealed the most common smart meter myths and the truth behind the claims.

Topics such as savings, security, mobile phone signal and switching supplier were all covered, along with an update on the number of installations in Mr Thomas’s West Cornwall constituency.

Currently more than 8,500 people in the constituency have smart meters and Mr Thomas encouraged more people to explore how they could use less energy and save money after getting a smart meter.

“Smart meters are a hot topic at the moment and so I’m very pleased the record is being set straight for consumers on issues such as savings, security, mobile phone signal and switching suppliers.

“It’s also great to hear that so many people in West Cornwall are saving money on their energy bills after upgrading to a smart meter. I would encourage anyone with questions about smart meters to contact their energy supplier to find out more.”

A spokesman from Smart Energy GB said: “Installed at no extra cost by your energy supplier, a smart meter will show how much gas and electricity you are using in near real time, and what it is costing in pounds and pence.

“Information is displayed on an in-home display, which helps households to reduce energy waste and save money.

“People with prepay meters can also benefit by getting a smart meter, making manging your home’s energy as easy as pay-as-you-go on your mobile. You can top up from the comfort of the sofa and there’s no need to return a key or card to the meter afterwards.”
