West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas is urging parents and schools to support a new initiative which is designed to help them become better informed about child safety online.
Social media giant Facebook has set up a ‘Parents Portal’ which answers many questions parents and guardians have surrounding the internet.
The new scheme has come at a time when it is estimated that children are spending more than three hours every day on their smartphones accessing sites like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.
The Facebook platform - www.facebook.com/safety/parents - includes a number of different sections such as a Bullying Prevention Hub, Parenting Tips and a list of links to safety experts.
To ensure that as many people as possible are aware of the initiative, Mr Thomas has written to teachers at schools in his St Ives constituency suggesting they let their students and parents know about the portal and the information it contains.
“Social media has become an increasingly important part of daily life for many of us,” said Mr Thomas.
“This Parents Portal is a welcome tool for parents and guardians who want their children to enjoy this form of communication safely which is why I am so keen to promote it.”
