Derek Opens Spiritual Garden

A little corner of a Penzance school has been turned into haven of peace and contemplation thanks to the efforts of children, staff members, parents and the local community.

A Spiritual Garden at St Mary’s C of E School was officially opened by West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas last week with the whole school in attendance to witness the ribbon-cutting.

Headteacher Hilary Tyreman said that she had first thought about building a garden in a small, neglected area of the school grounds when she became head, eight years ago.

“Some initial plans were drawn up but then put on hold and it wasn’t until last summer that we re-started the project and children from Year 5 came up with new plans on how it should look,” she said.

“The children then wrote very persuasive letters to local businesses for support and we were able to get the building work started last September.”

Led by teacher Andrew Varker, and with particular support from RGB Building Supplies, parents and teachers gave up their Saturday mornings to get the work done with – the garden contains seating, a section devoted to herb planting, a mosaic designed and made by the children, different themed areas and a cross made by parent and local artist John Keys.

“It’s brilliant that St Mary’s is supported so well by its mums and dads, off-duty teachers and the local community,” Mr Thomas said, as he opened the garden.

“The garden looks fantastic and I hope that you children make good use of it as a place for reflection during break times and that you look after it well.”
