Derek asks Minister to help small businesses achieve net zero

In the Commons Chamber today I pressed the Government to consider how we can make interest-free loans available to small businesses to retro-fit their buildings and install renewable energy technologies such as the fund that enables publicly-owned buildings to become more efficient.

The Government has recently committed to becoming 'net zero' by 2050 and since in the UK small businesses accounted for 99.3% of all private sector businesses at the start of 2018, I believe it will be vital to support them in improving their environmental credentials if we are to meet this target.

The Minister invited me to a meeting to discuss this idea further and, as Cornwall Council work towards a carbon-free plan by 2030, I’d be pleased to work with both Cornwall Council and the Minister to develop a scheme that would be locally delivered and enable our small businesses to access interest-free credit to improve the efficiency of their buildings and install renewable energy infrastructure. This would be a very good way to cut our carbon footprint and enable skills development.
