Since first elected in 2015 I have been leading a small eclectic mix of local residents who are determined that improvements are made to the A30 west of Camborne and in particular from St Erth through to Newtown Roundabout. There are not many days in the year when local residents are not held up at some point on this section of road but those of us who know the road stay well clear if at all possible during the summer. For many it is not possible and commuters are right to demand action.
Town and parish councils from Hayle through to Penzance are working together with local residents and myself to present a ‘Case for Action’ to Highways England and the Government later this year. This Case for Action sets out to demonstrate that we can safeguard our economy, local residents and critical connectivity by upgrading this section of the route to and from Penzance.
It is the main artery for road passengers and freight in and out Penwith and serves tens of thousands of people and thousands of businesses all year round. The Case for Action will present the argument for upgrading the route from Roseworthy Dip (just west of the Camborne junction) through to Newtown Roundabout which (if upgraded) will complete the A30 improvement which has seen a new section at Temple and is undergoing a major dual carriageway development at Chiverton Cross, Truro, right now.
The Case for Action will also demonstrate how the new road can improve the environment for the future as we cut congestion and distribute vehicles more easily and sensibly to the desired destination. There is a tremendous amount of work to do to convince decision-makers to invest in our road network this far west but I’m convinced of two things: the A30 can no longer cope with the demand we place on it along this section and, an upgrade is an essential part of my personal commitment to secure fit-for-purpose connectivity across transport on road, rail and trail for Penzance, St Ives and Hayle.
