Goonhilly Earth Station

Following a visit to the Goonhilly Earth Station in July 2015, Derek was elected to the Science and Technology Select Committee and also joined the All Party Parliamentary Group for Space. Goonhilly Earth Station has established itself as one of the most strategically important sites in the world

Cornish Fishing Industry & Brexit

Fishing remains a vital part of the Cornish economy. More than £20 million of fish is landed every year in Newlyn alone and the total value of the industry, when seafood processing is factored in, is worth almost £100 million to the Cornish economy.

Edward Hain Community Hospital 

Edward Hain was, along with all other Cornish and Scilly hospitals, operated by Peninsula Community Health until April 2016 when it was transferred to the Cornwall Partnership Foundation trust (CPFT). The building is owned by NHS Property Services.

A30 Bypass

In Derek’s West Cornwall constituency, 87% of businesses are classed as ‘micro businesses’ employing less than 10 employees. Derek continues to argue that the UK’s imminent departure from the EU offers the Government an ideal opportunity to reform what he sees as an out-dated and unfair Business Rate system.

Penzance Harbour

St Erth Sewage Treatment Works

There have been intermittent complaints about the ‘pong’ coming from the Hayle Sewage Treatment Works at St Erth for many years.

Penzance Heliport 

In October 2012, the old heliport, serving both St Mary’s and Tresco, ceased operations after almost 50 years; operators British International Helicopters cited rising costs and falling passenger numbers for the decision.

Health and Social Care Integration

NHS England have asked local areas to draw up plans (Sustainability and Transformation Plans – STP) to integrate health and care services in order to treat people closer to home, better manage demand on NHS services and keep better controls on health budgets.
